What's the course about?

This dynamic course gives you the sound knowledge and placement experiences to become a skilled, contemporary Physiotherapist. Covering anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, Physiotherapy practice and electrotherapy, the course hones your skills and provides opportunities for you to work with other healthcare professionals. You will normally carry out a two-week practice placement in Semester A and a four-week placement at the end of the first year in Semester C. During the second year there are usually two, five-week practice placements and in the final year you will carry out three, five-week practice placements.

Your main campus is College Lane 

This is where the creative arts, science and health-related subjects are based. This means you’ll share the campus with future nurses, scientists, artists and more. You can use the common rooms to relax with friends, work out in the 24-hour gym or have a drink in our on-campus pub or cafes. We also have restaurants for you to eat in or grab something on the go. Our Learning Resources Centres are open 24/7, which means you can study whenever suits you best. Want to pop over to the other campus? You can take the free shuttle bus or walk there in just 15 minutes.  

What will I study?

By adopting a problem-based integrated thematic approach, the Physiotherapy degree offers foundation studies in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, therapeutic practice and electrotherapy. Research and inter-professional working are considered core dimensions of the programme of study with students actively undertaking and engaging with research across the programme.

Practical skills are developed throughout the programme and are facilitated by the thematic scenario-based approach to learning and teaching, supported by practical laboratory sessions, and specialist high fidelity simulation sessions in the bespoke Physiotherapy simulation unit, as well as in small group discussions and tutorials.

Level 4

Foundations for Physiotherapy Practice	30 Credits	Compulsory
This module runs in Year 1 at the start of Semester A as a foundation f or physiotherapy practice. The student will be introduced to the systems of the body, movement analysis, motor learning and therapeutic exercise prescription. The focus of the module will be on developing the following skills: • Movement analysis • The safe and effective application of therapeutic exercise for healthy individuals and across a range of special populations • Planning and running an exercise class • Prescription of walking aids This module will form a foundation and the topics will be revisited and expanded in the specialist modules. Teaching will include a variety of theoretical and practical approaches including the use of patient scenarios. There is strong emphasis on developing practical clinical and communication skills throughout the module. All students will normally have the opportunity for teaching sessions in the university's gym at The Sports Village.
Cardiorespiratory 1	15 Credits	Compulsory
The student will learn about the normal f unction of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems and how they are affected by disease. The focus of the module will be developing the following skills for students: • Assessing the patient with cardiorespiratory dysfunction, identifying their problems using clinical reasoning skills. • Core cardiorespiratory physiotherapy treatment skills, how to evaluate their effectiveness and their application to this patient group across the various healthcare settings. • Understanding psychosocial f actors which may affect the patient's response to disease and management. • The role of the cardiorespiratory physiotherapist in the health and social care team. All students will be taught through a variety of theoretical and practical teaching approaches which are developed based on patient scenarios. There is strong emphasis on developing practical clinical and communication skills throughout the module. All students will normally have the opportunity to experience simulation based training to consolidate assessment and clinical reasoning skills.
Neurosciences 1	15 Credits	Compulsory
Building on students existing knowledge from previous level 4 modules the focus of the module will be on: • Understanding the normal functioning of the peripheral and central nervous systems and how they are affected by disease. • Developing skills of analysing normal and abnormal movement allowing students to clinically reason. • The tools needed to assess the patient with a neurological impairment to identify an effective management plan. • Applying core treatment skills and their evaluation will be practiced and applied to this patient group across the various health and social care settings. Students will be taught through a variety of theoretical and practical teaching approaches which are developed based on patient scenarios. All students will normally have the opportunity to participate in the assessment of a stroke patient who will visit during the module. In addition, neuroanatomy is normally supported by a visit to a dissection laboratory.
Musculoskeletal 1	30 Credits	Compulsory
During this module students will cover the anatomy, biomechanics and common pathologies affecting patients who have dysfunction in the lower limb and lumbar spine. The focus of the module will be developing the following skills for students: . Clinical reasoning skills to develop safe and effective assessment, treatment and management plans and to evaluate their outcomes. . The skills to perform safe and effective assessment, treatment and management in patients . Understanding psychosocial factors which may affect the patient's response to disease and management. . The importance of effective communication and the role of the physiotherapist in the health and social care team to optimise patient care. All students will be taught through a variety of theoretical and practical teaching approaches which are developed based on patient scenarios. There is strong emphasis on developing practical clinical and communication skills throughout the module. All students will normally have the opportunity to visit an anatomy dissection lab.
Practice Education 1: Respect and Dignity	30 Credits	Compulsory
The practice education module focuses upon the importance of respect and dignity in practice. Students will enhance their employability by working alongside others learning and by developing an understanding and being able to demonstrate how this particular value of the NHS Constitution applies in everyday work within all healthcare setting (NHS, Private, Charity and Independent Sectors). Students will undertake practice placements in settings providing them with the opportunity to develop their understanding of physiotherapy provision within a range of specialities and environments. Within this module students will also undertake and complete the mandatory training requirements necessary for them to engage in the practice environment.

Level 5

Cardiorespiratory 2	15 Credits	Compulsory
Building on the Cardiorespiratory 1 module, the assessment and management of a range of patients presenting with complex cardiorespiratory or vascular dysfunction, as well as those preceding and following amputation surgery will be considered. Assessment procedures, treatment and management strategies as well as monitoring and evaluation tools suitable for these patient groups will be investigated. For example: management of patients who are ventilated, amputee rehabilitation and specific vascular assessments. Learning will be facilitated by a variety of methods using case scenarios as a trigger. There will be student led seminars, tutorials and practical workshops. There is strong emphasis on enhancing practical clinical and communication skills throughout the module. All students will normally have the opportunity to experience simulation based training to consolidate assessment and clinical reasoning skills. Students will be encouraged to explore, discuss and share their clinical experiences to illustrate issues of patient management.
Practice Education 2: Compassion	15 Credits	Compulsory
This practice education module focuses upon the importance of compassion in practice. Students will enhance their employability by developing an understanding and being able to demonstrate how this particular value of the NHS Constitution applies in everyday work within all health and social care settings (NHS, Private, Charity and Independent sectors). Students will undertake the module in practice settings providing them with the opportunity to develop their understanding of physiotherapy provision within a range of specialties and environments. Within this module students will also undertake and complete the mandatory training requirements necessary for them to engage in the practice environment.
Complex Patient Care	15 Credits	Compulsory
During this module the students will develop their learning from both level 4 and 5 modules applying their knowledge and skills to the management of complex patients bringing together their neurological and cardiorespiratory knowledge. The complexity of the patients relates to: A range of age groups Diverse and wide-reaching backgrounds Ethical and legal issues Pathologies/presentations stemming from neurological and/or cardiorespiratory dysfunction The needs of these complex patients will be considered in a range of settings from tertiary to primary care. Focus will also be given to the importance of the role of the health team and associated role boundaries to provide the best practice within these settings to these patient groups.
Practice Education 3 - Everyone Counts	15 Credits	Compulsory
This practice education module focuses upon the application of equality and diversity principles to enable students to recognise and value diversity within the healthcare setting to ensure positive behaviour towards patients, carers, colleagues and the wider health and social care team. It highlights the importance of advancing equality of opportunity, fostering good relations and equity of access to, and delivery/distribution of, health and social care resources. Students will enhance their employability by developing an understanding and being able to demonstrate how this particular value of the NHS Constitution applies in everyday work within all healthcare settings (NHS, Private, Charity and Independent sectors). Students will undertake the module in practice settings providing them with the opportunity to develop their understanding of physiotherapy provision within a range of specialties and environments.
Musculoskeletal 2	30 Credits	Compulsory
During this module students will study the anatomy, biomechanics and common pathologies affecting patients who have dysfunction in the upper limb and/or spine. They will consider the skills needed to assess these, building on level 4 knowledge and skills developed during MSK1. Clinical reasoning is a key component of the module providing a framework to enable students to plan and carry out safe, skilful and effective assessment and management programmes. Using a biopsychosocial approach students will apply/ practice and evaluate these physiotherapeutic assessment and treatment skills in relation to this patient group across the various settings studied. These include the ability to communicate effectively with patients and to take a holistic approach to their management.
Neurosciences 2	15 Credits	Compulsory
This module builds upon previous modules to date in the development of knowledge and skills involved in the assessment and treatment of the neurological patient. Neuro-anatomy, physiology and pathology will be studied to greater depth. Comprehensive team management of the neurological patient will be considered. Students are encouraged to reflect upon patients seen during clinical placements and work experience to help them to problem solve issues encountered. This will normally be enhanced by having the opportunity to experience a patient visit to consolidate assessment and clinical reasoning skills. This module focusses upon clinical reasoning skills applied to the early, middle and later stage patient, recognizing rehabilitation and management in a variety of settings.
Research Methods	15 Credits	Compulsory
The focus of this module is to enable the students to further develop their knowledge and understanding of research principles, processes and methods and to engender a critical understanding of their application within health and social care settings. Students will develop detailed knowledge of well-established theories and concepts regarding elements of research, demonstrating an awareness of these within different contexts and using a range of frameworks. The module introduces students to the concepts of audit and service evaluation, encouraging them to consider this in the light of their clinical experiences. Students are required to explore and evaluate qualitative and quantitative research techniques to facilitate their understanding of the importance of evidence-based practice. They will analyse a range of information comparing alternative methods and techniques.

This practice education module focuses upon the importance of working together for patients and the need for honesty, accountability, candour and transparency in all situations. Published (visible) Students will enhance their employability by developing an understanding and being able to demonstrate how this particular value of the NHS Constitution applies in everyday work within all healthcare settings (NHS, Private, Charity and Independent sectors). Students will undertake the module in practice settings providing them with the opportunity to develop their understanding of physiotherapy provision within a range of specialties and environments. Aspects relating to future employability will be introduced in this module Within this module students will also undertake and complete the mandatory training requirements necessary for them to engage in the practice environment.
Advancing Practice	15 Credits	Compulsory
This module will build on the proceeding year's study to enable students to integrate the relevant aspects of previous modules together with their practice experience to achieve a comprehensive view of physiotherapy practice within areas of cardiorespiratory, neurosciences, neuromusculoskeletal and exercise therapy. Students will be given opportunities to broaden their skills through analysis and problem solving, critically evaluating current practice, examining the extent to which it is evidence based. All students will normally have the opportunity to experience simulation based training to consolidate assessment and clinical reasoning skills. The work in the simulation centre will also help to improve students' confidence in leadership skills relating to the acutely deteriorating patient necessitating an accurate, co-ordinated and timely response.
Practice Education 5: Improving Lives	15 Credits	Compulsory
This practice education module focuses upon the importance of empowering patients to improve the quality of their lives for example through on-going service improvement initiatives, health improvement activities, self-management and ensuring clinical excellence. Students will enhance their employability by developing an understanding and being able to demonstrate how this particular value of the NHS Constitution applies in everyday work within all healthcare settings (NHS, Private, Charity and Independent sectors). Students will undertake the module in practice settings providing them with the opportunity to develop their understanding of physiotherapy provision within a range of specialties and environments. Aspects relating to future employability will be introduced in this module.
Practice Education 6: Commitment to Quality Care	15 Credits	Compulsory
This practice education module focuses upon the commitment to quality of care in practice ensuring safety, effectiveness and patient experience is right every time for every patient. The importance of seeking and responding to stakeholder feedback is highlighted in enhancing professional practice. Students will enhance their employability by developing an understanding and being able to demonstrate how this particular value of the NHS Constitution applies in everyday work within all healthcare settings (NHS, Private, Charity and Independent sectors). Students will undertake the module in practice settings providing them with the opportunity to develop their understanding of physiotherapy provision within a range of specialties and environments.
Physiotherapy Practice in Health and Social Care	30 Credits	Compulsory
This module will build upon the proceeding year's study to enable students to integrate the relevant aspects of previous modules together with their practice experience to achieve a comprehensive view of physiotherapy practice. Students will be given opportunities to broaden their skills through analysis and problem solving within different patient groups and settings that may present multiple pathology and complex social and psychological needs, for example patients living with dementia or those with a palliative oncological diagnosis. Students will have the opportunity to critically evaluate current practice, examine the extent to which it is evidence based. The role of the physiotherapist and the specialist knowledge they contribute to collaborative interprofessional/inter-agency working will be analysed and reflected upon. Students will also consider and critically analyse collaborative and interprofessional working strategies that contribute to person centred care.
Applied Research	30 Credits	Compulsory
The module builds upon study of research at Levels 4 and 5. The module will include critical analysis of papers drawing on a range of research methodologies, incorporation of evidence into practice and discussions of the various challenges facing researchers (e.g. ethical, financial, practical, intellectual). Students will undertake research involving both qualitative and/or quantitative methods which will enable the students to critically discuss issues regarding data collection, measurement, analysis and clinically applicable outcome measures.

Work placement
Throughout your studies on the BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy course, practice placements will be interspersed with your studies giving you the all-important valuable experience that you will need when you graduate. More specifically the indicative number of practice placement hours per year are:
- First year: 204 hours (usually a two and four-week placement)
- Second year: 340 hours (usually two five-week placements)
- Third year: 510 hours (usually three five-week placements)
Each placement is embedded within a graded credit-bearing module which will focus on one of the NHS values. These placements will give you the opportunity to link the theoretical knowledge and practical skills learnt in the University setting, to the real-life practice situation. During practice placements you will be given support, supervision and education from highly qualified clinicians while maintaining links to tutors back at the University. We typically visit each student at least once during every placement, to provide additional support and guidance as required.

You might also want or need extra support during your time with us. Rest assured, no matter what you study, we’ve got you covered. For help with study skills, including referencing, essay writing and presentations, you’ll have access to our academic support services. You can attend workshops, 1-to-1 sessions, and online tutorials. Both our LRCs (Learning Resources Centres) run drop-in study skills sessions. And the best thing is, it’s all free.

Essential skills for the future

Ramatu graduated having studied Nutrition and has now entered her chosen career as a Registered Nutritionist (RNutr) with the Association for Nutrition (AfN). She currently works as a School Food Nutritionist for Herts Catering Limited (HCL). Her course enabled Ramatu to achieve her career aspirations, providing invaluable experience which included work shadowing, volunteering and practical work placement opportunities alongside various registered nutritionists and dieticians.

Ramatu says, 'Many employers advertise for nutritionists who are already registered with the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN). In order to register, you would need to be able to demonstrate that you meet the underpinning knowledge and professional skills required.' Studying a BSc (Hons) in Nutrition or related bioscience degree provides students with an abundance of practicable and transferable experience which will enable you to make crucial inroads into the profession.'

Experience is crucial

Experience is crucial and Ramatu attests that it is even more beneficial than good grades. She advises students to seek out as much opportunity as possible to gain professional experience and says, 'My priority is to continually develop professionally as a Registered Nutritionist as there is always room to improve my own practice and service delivery.' The University provides fantastic opportunities for students through work placements, study abroad schemes as well as the fantastic industry led practical elements embedded into the courses themselves.

A unique degree and experience

Khan says his ambition to work in London and move out of his hometown in Cardiff was a key factor in choosing to study at the University of Hertfordshire. However, his course also provided a unique combination of theoretical and practical study which Khan says, 'prepared me to put my knowledge into practice while out on placement each term. The course also gave me a glimpse of future opportunities for paramedics such as teaching, management and advanced practice.'

The vocational nature of the degree enabled him to transition smoothly into his chosen career providing him with the essential professional skills and hands on experience he required to excel as a paramedic. He says, 'The course gives you the knowledge to make lifesaving decisions but also gives you more advanced knowledge regarding complicated conditions and the various medicines that come with each patient.'

Khan speaks fondly of his time at the University and says, 'I truly miss everyone I became friends with on my degree. Some of the nights out in the Forum were the best I've ever had and they will be everlasting memories, with friends both on and off of my course. I really came out of my shell and comfort zone and it has made me into the confident and outgoing person I am today.'

Khan says that being a paramedic is the 'best job in the World' and, although he has just started his career, he hopes to go onto postgraduate study and experience new cultures by travelling.

Interview

We carry out individual 'mini' interviews during an afternoon, during which applicants are interviewed by small panels consisting of Physiotherapy lecturers, Physiotherapy clinicians, current Physiotherapy students and Experts by Experience (patients, clients, carers, etc).

NHS Funding for UK/EU Students

Students studying on nursing, midwifery or allied health professional courses funded by Health Education England will have access to the same student loans support package and support for living costs as other students.

You could also benefit from the NHS learning support fund if you study an eligible nursing, midwifery, or allied health course. If eligible, the different kinds of support you could get include a training grant, parental support, money back for travel and temporary accommodation whilst on placement, and financial hardship (which you won’t need to pay back).

Student membership of Chartered Society of Physiotherapy £40.33.

Accommodation costs for clinical placements for students who are not eligible for an NHS Bursary, includes international and Irish students (figures quoted depends upon placement venue and distance travelled). Eligible students can claim back all, or part of their costs, dependant on circumstances. Approximately £1,800.

Transport to clinical placements (students can claim if eligible for NHS Bursary and travel costs). Approximately £600
